The Center (formerly Research Center for Pathogenic Fungi and Microbial Toxicoses) is the only research institution in Japan in which comprehensive studies on fungal infection and pathogenic fungi are conducted. The Center was established in 1987 as a nation-wide collaborative organization in Japan, and it is now recognized as a leading research institute by domestic and overseas researchers in this field. The ultimate goal of this Center is to overcome fungal diseases and related disorders by seeking diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive measures through investigation of the mechanisms of the diseases. In the light of importance of microbial genetic resources, the unit for collection of pathogenic fungi and actinomycetes has been established to reinforce the project to preserve microbial resources. In 2007, the Center was designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as the core organization of “National BioResource Project-Pathogenic Microorganisms” and has established a firm position as the facility to preserve genetic resources of pathogenic fungi and actinomycetes.
