The Center for Language Education (CLE) is a newly established organization that is responsible for language teaching mainly for undergraduate students. It consists of three semi-independent sections: the English Section, the (non-English) Modern Language Section, and the Japanese Section. The English Language Section (ELS) is in charge of teaching English to undergraduate and graduate students. It is also in charge of curriculum design and faculty development in English teaching. A special mention should be made to the CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) institution at the ELS which plays an important role not only in providing structured English teaching but also in facilitating students to learn English voluntarily according to their linguistic levels and interests. The ELS thus helps students to develop skills in English in many ways. The Modern Languages Section (German, French, Chinese and Russian) is responsible for language education and research for undergraduates, and also for designing intensive education courses that will be provided to graduates or undergraduates who will study abroad. The ability to think critically and express ideas logically is highly expected of Japanese professionals in a global world. The Japanese Section of the CLE explores the reason(s) why Japanese students often cannot put forward their points of view, questions or arguments effectively even in Japanese. After an extensive analysis, a curriculum will be developed mainly for freshmen for writing and presentation for general and academic purposes. Emphasis will be placed also on the development of study skills, logical and critical thinking, and strategies how to integrate them into academic writings and presentations. Therefore, the Center is not only limited to teaching language skills; our aim is also to provide students with the opportunity to enhance the range and depth of knowledge in their specialized fields and to further scholarly exchange and international communication. The instructional faculty at the Center represents a variety of cultural and intellectual backgrounds which provide a unique opportunity for pursuing culturally unbiased researches.
